Henoceros falcatus Milne, 1916
Henoceros falcatus: pregnant specimen from (4); lateral view.

Henoceros falcatus: lateral view. A species with four big toes that are not retracted while floating in the water. Instead of two spurs like other bdelloid rotifers Henoceros has one large appendage (arrowhead). Specimen from (1).

Henoceros falcatus: dorsoventral view. Specimen from (1).

Henoceros falcatus: lateral view of the anterior part. Visible is the barrel-shaped dorsal antenna (DA), the (sensory) cilia (Ci) of the rostrum and the trophi (Tr) which can be protruded. (1)

Henoceros falcatus: 4 images of the head, different focus planes of dorsoventral view (images not to scale). Upper left: focus plane on the rostrum. C: ciliated area; S: sensory area; RL: rostrum lamella. The arrows mark some two V-shaped (epipharyngeal??) structures . (1)
Upper right: focus plane on the rostrum lamella (RL), which is bent ventrally in this image and thus covers the ciliated area. The arrow points to a circular structure in the rostrum which can also be observed in some Adineta species, for example A. steineri (2nd image). Also visible is the preoral ciliated area. (1)
Lower left: focus plane on the Y-shaped preoral ciliated area. Also visible are parts of the trophi (major tooth of uncus and part of ramus). (1)
Lower right: focus plane on the ventral part of the head showing the cheeks (Ch) and flaps (F) in the mouth area (M). (1)

Henoceros falcatus: ventral view of creeping specimen. Focus plane on the rostrum (right) and the foot with 4 toes (VT: ventral toes; DT: dorsal toes) and the dorsal appendage (Ap). Also visible are the retractable tips of the dorsal toes (arrows); the ventral toes have distinct tips as well, but those are retracted in this image. (2)

Henoceros falcatus: lateral view of posterior part; focus plane on the dorsal appendage. (3)

Henoceros falcatus: dorsal appendage and dorsal toe, detail. (4)

Henoceros falcatus: specimen with egg. The egg has a smooth shell, which is in contrast to the egg drawn by Bendt (1984) (5)

Henoceros falcatus: two images of the ramate trophi. The arrows mark two V-shaped (epipharyngeal??) structures which do not dissolve in SDS, but in NaOCl, so they are not chitinous. Ma: manubrium; Ra: ramus; U: uncus

Henoceros falcatus: lateral view of specimen from (7)

Henoceros falcatus: ventral view of specimen from (8)
